Spring Dead Spot affects bermudagrass and other warm-season grasses, creating circular dead patches that fail to green up after winter. It results from fungal infection in late summer and fall, weakening roots. Cultural practices such as maintaining proper potassium levels and aeration help reduce disease severity.

Spring dead spot (SDS) is caused by Ophiosphaerella species that infect the roots, stolons, and rhizomes of warm-season grasses, primarily couch (bermudagrass), during autumn and winter when soil temperatures drop below 15°C. The infection kills plant tissue below ground during the dormant period, but symptoms only become visible in spring when surrounding turf greens up and the dead patches remain brown. These circular dead spots range from 150 mm to over 1 metre in diameter.
SDS is most severe on mature couch turf (3+ years old) with heavy thatch accumulation, in regions with cool to cold winters. Excessive nitrogen fertility in late autumn that promotes lush, succulent growth heading into winter increases susceptibility. Compacted soils with poor drainage, high soil pH, and thatch layers greater than 15 mm all elevate disease risk. The disease is progressive. Once established in a site, patches typically recur and enlarge each year without intervention.
Prevention starts in autumn with reduced nitrogen inputs, thatch management through core aerification, and addressing elevated soil pH. Preventative fungicide applications should be made when soil temperatures at 50 mm depth fall to around 15 to 18°C.
