Leptosphaerulina spp
Leptosphaerulina causes irregular, tan leaf spots with dark borders, primarily in stressed turf. It thrives in cool, wet conditions and affects various grass species. Managing stress, improving airflow, and applying fungicides as needed can help control outbreaks.
Control Options:
Adama Chief Topflo, Indigo Proforce Tombstone Duo, Indigo Proforce Voltar Gt 250sc.
Leptosphaerulina leaf blight is caused by Leptosphaerulina species and produces small, initially water-soaked lesions on leaf blades that rapidly expand into irregular brown or tan blighted areas. Unlike helminthosporium, which typically shows well-defined oval lesions with distinct borders, leptosphaerulina lesions tend to be more diffuse and can quickly progress to overall leaf dieback. The disease is most common on couch, kikuyu, and zoysia during warm, humid weather with extended leaf wetness.
The disease favours warm temperatures combined with extended periods of high humidity and moisture on the leaf surface. Poorly drained areas, heavy thatch accumulation, and low mowing heights that stress the turf all increase susceptibility. Overhead irrigation during late afternoon or evening, which extends leaf wetness overnight, is one of the most common management-related triggers.
Improving drainage, reducing thatch depth, irrigating in the early morning, and maintaining adequate fertility to support vigorous turf growth are essential cultural controls. Preventative fungicide applications timed ahead of warm, humid periods are more effective than curative treatments after extensive leaf damage.
