Margarodes spp.
Ground pearls are soil-dwelling scale insects that attach to turfgrass roots and suck out nutrients. They form hard, pearl-like cysts that make them resistant to insecticides. Infested turf shows slow growth, thinning, and yellowing. These pests are difficult to control, with cultural management (e.g., proper watering and fertilization) being the best approach.
