Curvularia spp.
Curvularia is a fungal pathogen that causes leaf spots and melting-out diseases in warm-season turfgrasses, including bermudagrass and zoysiagrass. Symptoms appear as irregular brown to black lesions on leaves, leading to thinning turf. The disease thrives in high humidity and stress conditions. Management involves reducing stress through proper mowing and fertilization, improving drainage, and applying fungicides when necessary.
Control Options:
Indigo Proforce Tombstone Duo, Syngenta Posterity, Syngenta Velista, Turf Culture Impala.
Curvularia causes a gradual thinning and yellowing of the turf, often described as "fading out." Individual leaf blades develop small, dark brown lesions with yellow halos that merge as the disease progresses, giving the turf a bronzed, desiccated appearance. Couch (bermudagrass), kikuyu, and buffalo grass are commonly affected. The disease is most active in warm, humid conditions and is frequently misdiagnosed as heat stress or nutrient deficiency.
Curvularia is an opportunistic pathogen that exploits turf already weakened by heat stress, drought, low mowing, compaction, or nutrient imbalance. It commonly develops during prolonged warm, humid weather when turf is under cumulative stress. This is why improving overall plant health through balanced fertility, appropriate irrigation scheduling, and reduced mechanical stress is as important as chemical treatment.
Address cultural factors first by raising mowing heights slightly, ensuring adequate potassium nutrition, and avoiding drought stress through appropriate irrigation management. Early intervention before extensive leaf loss leads to faster recovery. For specific fungicide recommendations and an integrated management plan, speak with the experts at Greenway Turf Solutions.
